The National Institute of Science Education and Research under the aegis of the Indian Department of Atomic Energy. The institute is affiliated with Homi Bhabha National Institute is inviting applications for Summer Internship / Short-term & Long-term (Dissertation) Project Work at School of Biological Sciences as per the details below:-

Notice for inviting applications from the students interested for Summer Internship / Short-term & Long-term (Dissertation) Project Work at School of Biological Sciences in NISER, Bhubaneswar

The School of Biological Sciences, NISER invites applications for the following programs from the students registered/enrolled in the science-related UG/PG degree course in the recognized Universities / Institutions.

A) Summer Internship / Short-term Project Program:

This program aims to provide hands-on training to the UG/PG science students interested in scientific research, especially in Biological Sciences, as a short-term project. The intern/student will work under the guidance/supervision of a faculty member from SBS. On successful completion of the project assignment, the intern shall be issued a “Project Completion Certificate”. Other details of the program are given below:

  1. Summer Interns/Short-term Project students will be allowed for 3 months (May to July 2024).
  2. No extension for a longer stay will be considered in this program.
  3. Students who have availed this program earlier at SBS-NISER will not be considered again.
  4. Applications will be considered only for the lab the student has applied against the available seat(s).
  5. Students interested in multiple labs may apply separately to the respective Principal Investigators (PI).
  6. The selection of students will be done by the respective Lab PI/Faculty.
  7. In this program, no fee will be charged to the students, nor will the Institute pay any financial support
    /stipend.

B) Long-term/Dissertation Project Work Program:

This program mainly aims to facilitate science students registered for PG degree courses who have partial requirements for fulfillment of dissertation thesis work in the field of biological sciences. The selected student will work under the supervision of SBS faculty on a chosen dissertation topic. Other details of the program are given below:

  1. Long-term/dissertation project students will be allowed for a maximum of 6 months (July to December 2024).
  2. No extension for a longer stay will be considered in this program. However, only in an exceptional case can one extension be considered subject to the satisfactory performance of the candidates & project requirement duly evaluated by the committee appointed by the Chairperson-SBS.
  3. Students who have availed this program earlier at SBS-NISER will not be considered again.
  4. Applications will be considered only for the lab the student has applied to against the available seat(s).
  5. Students interested in multiple labs may apply separately to the respective Lab-PIs
  6. The selection of students will be done by the respective Lab PIs/Faculty.
  7. Students from the private universities/colleges/institutes selected for this program will have to pay the program fee of Rs. 10,000/- for 6 months. An additional fee will be charged proportionately in case of an extension of the stay period.
  8. There is no provision for any financial support or payment of a stipend from the institute in this program.

How to apply:

Interested students may apply for the above programs using the prescribed application form given in Annexure – 1 to this notice. Applications will be received through e-mail only. Applicants need to send the scanned copy of the filled-in application form & “Bonafide-Cum-No Objection Certificate” in a single PDF file to the E-mail ID of the respective Lab-PI / Faculty. The details of the current research areas, lab-wise available seats, PIs/ Faculty & their E-mail ID to apply are given in the Table-1. The last date to apply for these programs is April 2nd, 2024. Applications received after the last date & without “Bonafide-Cum-No Objection Certificate” will not be considered.

General Terms & Conditions:

Students will be allowed in the above programs subject to the following conditions: they shall have to sign an undertaking at the time of joining the institute if selected.
a) The data or any intellectual property generated from the students’ summer Internship/short-term/long-term project work shall be owned by NISER with full rights to its use for academic & research purposes.
b) The Summer Interns/Short-term/Long-term dissertation project students shall have no rights to the data generated during their project work at NISER. The use of the said data by them for any purpose, including authorship in publications, patents, or any other commercial, non-commercial, academic research without prior approval/consent of the competent authority of NISER, is completely prohibited. However, the data can only be used to prepare the project report/dissertation thesis under the supervision of the respective faculty guide/PI. Students may deposit a copy of the stated project report/dissertation thesis to their parent institution if required for academic purposes.
c) The Summer Interns/Short-term/Long-term dissertation project students shall have to maintain strict confidentiality & utmost care while disclosing or dealing with the data/information pertaining to the Institute/school/lab/instrumentation etc.
d) In the event of any infringement of the above conditions, appropriate disciplinary/legal action shall be taken by the authorities of NISER against the erring person.
e) Students shall follow the instructions of their respective faculty/PIs strictly & the concerned faculty/PIs will be supervising & monitoring their activities inside the lab & campus.

f) Students are expected to maintain proper discipline/decorum all the time during their stay on campus. In the event of any misconduct, disciplinary action as deemed fit will be taken by the school authorities against the student.
g) Students must abide by the relevant rules and deposit caution money if required while availing the hostel accommodation, central library, or any other facility at NISER.
h) No NISER e-mail ID will be given to the summer interns/short-term/long-term dissertation project students.
i) Students will have to use their own laptops for any personal work; however, departmental guest Wi-Fi login may be shared to access the internet only for project work. If the NISER-Computer Center reports any misuse of the internet facility, then disciplinary action as deemed fit will be taken by the NISER authorities against the student.
j) Hostel accommodation may be provided on a chargeable basis, subject to availability.
